Finally finished reading George Orwell’s much acclaimed book 1984, it truly is a work of art and way ahead of its time. It’s truly shocking and one of the most disturbing books I’ve read in a while. Yet he manages to capture the true horrors which potentially exist in the current world as we know it. The power of the media has always been acknowledged, but at least the power of intelligence and the human mind allows freedom of thought to question whatever information is presented to us and we are free to create our own opinions as well as search out other answers. However 1984 does capture some of the horrors that do exist where information is controlled by a dictatorship who control the media and access to the outside world. It is disturbing to acknowledge that parts of the world exist where it’s inhabitants are oblivious to the truth or have no idea what else is going on around the planet we all share. 1984 makes you question the power of the mind and the desire to ensure freedom of thought over rules anything else. However it does need to be acknowledged that Big Brother does exist amongst us. We are monitored by CCTV, our library cards capture what we read, our credit/debit cards identify our spending habits which reflect the person we are, passports show which parts of the world we have experienced, telephone bills show who we have contact with and so the list goes on. So whilst Orwell’s novel initially feels far-fetched, when you look more closely you realise that it hits a nerve and in actual fact we are partially living amidst the world he writes about……………… one can at least refrain from completely going insane at this thought safe in the knowledge that the human mind is well equipped to challenge, question and dispute what is being told – well it is where I live but it possibly isn’t true of everywhere but at least there are enough intelligent people on the planet who would fight for the cause of others.

Rat Race

Had a much-needed and much deserved leisurely day out of the rat race today and even better still, the weather was fantastic! I’m starting to find the rat race incredibly draining. For five days a week I walk to work amidst a sea of people who wear blank expressions on their faces, are so lost in their thoughts they never notice what surrounds them and they all march to work like androids. It’s disturbing to see so many miserable looking faces, some hiding beneath a thick mask of make up trying to hide from the world, whilst others blatantly show their misery. Yet the astonishing thing is that their lives needn’t be like this, they could all lead happy, fulfilling lives and they could all enjoy their existence much more than they currently do. Yet they are too sunk in their dark dim world to notice the light of the silver lining, they are too absorbed in their own misery to care and worse still I think some of them enjoy being so miserable – it gives them purpose. One day I hope to leave this all behind and only enter the rat race as a passing visitor. I long for the day to truly live the life I want, would enjoy and most of all know I deserve. So I made a promise to myself today, to start making small changes that would get me to the life I’d really like to enjoy, to the life I’ve longed for and to the life I know I can actually have if I put my mind to it. So here’s the start of an exciting new adventure, the first step was to have a proper de -clutter of items……………………..

Idiotic conduct

I drag myself into work five days out of seven every week. Whilst I quite enjoy my job, I don’t always enjoy being around some of the people I have the misfortune to work with. Everyday I witness people using corporate phones for personal use, creative filling in of their flexi sheets, creative use of corporate time such as going shopping thanks to the taxpayer, bitching about competent colleagues and literally passing the hours of the day by finding genius ways of doing nothing. And whilst all this goes on some of those who can do something about it wander around conveniently with their blinkers on, turning a blind eye and pretending they haven’t noticed or worse still are consumed by so much cowardice that they wait for others to raise it as an issue and then they hide behind that person so that they become the victim of the offender and not them. How is such madness allowed and how is it possible for this to be in a 21st century work environment especially when resources such as money is so scarce?

How can I, an intelligent woman get reeled in? How? How is it possible? There I am minding my own business, when along it comes, smiling, chatting, joking, just being and before you know it – there I am reeled in hook, line and sinker!! How???????????????????????????? How have I, who is so alert, so wary, so on guard, find myself on the end of this hook? It happened so slowly, so subtly and so nicely that by the time I realised what had happened it was too late to do anything about it…………………… Oh well guess I’ll just have to enjoy it, nothing else for it!!

There’s a strange fascination about Facebook. We all log on hoping to see if there’s a nice message waiting for us or better still if an old friend has looked us up and sent a request, and we are heavily disappointed when there’s nothing there waiting for us. The etiquette of this strange world is just as peculiar as our expectations of it. People add friends to their lists even though they’ve never met or spoken but suddenly they’re all friends. It becomes a mad frenzy of whose got the most number of friends yet little time is actually spent communicating with them, in actual reality it would be near impossible to communicate with them all unless you spent all day on the PC. Then’s there’s the madness of what people actually write, forgetting that it’s all there for everyone to see and then they’re baffled when their heat of the moment comments come back and haunt them! Worst of all is the adding of pictures which you really wouldn’t want the whole world to see but apparently some of the people want everyone and anyone to see no matter what state they’re in. And then there’s my favourite, the competitiveness of whose having the best life, whose having the most amount of fun, whose got the best outfits, holidays, etc the list is endless and when it all goes wrong some of these people then use this site to make snipes and digs at people they no longer like or who are now their ex’s – it would be far less stressful if they just deleted these people from their page but alas no, it appears common sense is also lost when you join Facebook. I personally love it simply for the banter and let the rest of them go mad, after all it is not I who suffers from confidence and self-esteem issues so who am I to intervene, no I’ll just be adult like and sit back and let them get on with it, only on this occasion I won’t bother saying I told you so when the next disaster unfolds in front of us…………….

Prada

I so love the world of Prada, it’s a world I was well and truly made for. However at the moment I truly feel like a Prada shoe that has accidently been dispatched to Primark and here I am stuck on a shelf waiting to be sent back to the wonderful world I belong in. They always say one should always respect, love and value oneself highly, if you don’t how can you truly expect others to? So here I sit all wrapped up in my beautiful tissue paper, in the divine box, nestled in a dust bag sitting high on the shelf until I eventually find my way back to my world, because find my way back I will. It’s ok in life to take the wrong road, many a time we will find ourselves thinking we are lost, confused and baffled as to how we’ve ended up where we are. And whilst I may ponder on how I’ve ended up in the wrong world deep down I know that I’ll find myself where I truly belong………………………………menawhile I’ll enjoy the journey of being lost and shall simply look at it as a little adventure but panic not to the world of Prada I SHALL return!!

Bank Holiday

Yet another bank holiday weekend was upon us and I so enjoyed lazing around doing very little. I did take my young niece to Newark to see the Town Hall, the Castle ruins and the very tiny so small if you blink you’ll miss it town centre! We got hungry and were annoyed to discover that both of the fish and chips shops in Newark were shut – at lunch time???? We then drove to Southwell where she enjoyed the Minster and lit a candle, something she’d never done before, visited the minster shop then the tiny high street. She spotted a fish and chip shop and guess what, it was shut – clearly these people never eat out!!! The cake shop had very little selection so I drove home, took her around the supermarket, got her cake that she wanted and finally got home. She was so exhausted that she went for a lie down and didn’t surface for another hour or so and then finally had her ham sandwich followed by chocolate cake. Oh well at least she had an interesting day which was better than sitting around getting bored!

Posh Buffet

Was invited to one of the poshest buffet lunches at work ever. I got the pleasure of trying out some culinary delights that my taste buds had never previously encountered. I devoured rabbit, pheasant, goose and venison all of which I had never in my years tasted and this seemed like a great opportunity to try them out and try them out I did! I was actually quite pleasantly surprised though I did pass on the black pudding, that’s something I never want to try out ever!! This was definitely one day that work was boring, far from it in fact!!

Nottingham Contemporary

Went to see the Uneven Geographies art exhibition today. I nodded my headed, looked at the art quizzically, tilted my head from side to side and walked further and closer away from the exhibits to see what they were trying to tell me. I think I pulled it off!! It was an interesting exhibition with some very intriguing and clever exhibits. One of my favourites was looking at the maps that an artist had drawn which drew out the links between the big players, any corruption and conspiracy theories that arose and timelines between events – fascinating to see how the bigger picture looked and on this occasion it looked rather ugly. It was definitely an exhibit that made you think and reassess your own morals and ethics so I left feeling quite questioned and challenged which isn’t a bad thing – recommend everyone try it now and then, it’s good for the soul!!
